Guest Speaker Woon Yen Prall will demonstrate the art of Ikebana floral arranging. This is also the day of our annual Tea Party, so come at noon and bring a tea cup to enjoy this tradition. Hats and gloves are optional, but fun!

The Franklin Garden Club meets on 3rd Wednesdays at the Cornerstone Building in Franklin. Our program begins at 1:00 and the social time starts at 12:30, so come early for food, fellowship, and fun!

Kids Day at Wallis Arboretum

We’re getting ready for the third annual (free) Kids Day at the Arboretum, Monday, July 29. We are continuing Mrs. Wallis’s generosity of inviting children into her garden (Arboretum) to explore and learn about plants and the environment.

This year, Kids Day registration will begin 9:30am at the Paris/Bourbon County Library with Smokey Bear’s visit and Smokey film, followed by lunch at the Arboretum and a Scavenger Hunt that includes a booklet to record the items found and color, plus these educational activities: Hydroponics, Composting, Bees, Recycling, Rain Garden /Rain Barrel and a visit to the Carriage House complete with full-size ‘horse’, tack and carriage.

Hands-on activities include

  • the very popular Build-a-Bug,
  • Newspaper Puppet (finger puppet),
  • Painted Tee Shirts (supplied by GCKY and the Library back by popular demand),
  • Coffee Filter Seed Packets(seed for the kids to plant), and
  • Milk Jug Watering Can to decorate to water their plants.

And, a bag to decorate to hold all the things they will make throughout the afternoon. Activities will conclude at 3:00pm. The day at the Arboretum is open to all children 6-12. They must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Open to the Public! Free to All!

Christmas In August Auction

Wallis Arboretum Carriage House Restored

Carriage House at Wallis HouseThe Nannine Clay Wallis Arboretum Committee will hold a dedication for the restored 1903 Carriage House dedication on Monday, October 7, 1:00, The Garden Club of Kentucky will sponsor the ribbon cutting and special presentations to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels for its emergency grant and to GCKY members and clubs that made possible the restoration. The public is invited to join in the celebration followed by refreshments and tour of the Carriage House.

The restored Carriage House is taking on a new function in the Arboretum. It will be used for classes, workshops, and rentals for parties, weddings and other special events.

Mrs. Wallis’ father, Thomas Clay, built the Carriage House when he purchased the 616 Pleasant Street property from his uncle’s estate. The house was in the Clay family from 1856 until 1970 when Mrs. Wallis bequeathed it to GCKY.

DWAYNE ESTES PH.D., EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dr. Dwayne Estes

Southeastern Grassland Initiative

Dwayne Estes serves as executive director at Southeastern Grasslands Initiative. He is a Full Professor of Biology, Director of the APSU Herbarium, and Principal Investigator for the Center of Excellence for Field Biology. In January 2017, he co-founded SGI with colleague, Theo Witsell. Under his leadership as director of SGI, the fledgling organization has secured more than $2 million dollars in funding, and in the past five years he and his collaborators have been awarded three grants from the National Science Foundation.

 Dwayne’s research interests include the flora, ecology, history, biodiversity, and biogeography of the Southeastern U.S. with emphasis on grasslands. He has published 20+ publications and co-authored the Guide to the Vascular Plants of Tennessee published in 2015 by the University of Tennessee Press. He enjoys mentoring his six graduate students and working hand-in-hand with a dedicated SGI team. He has been active in building diverse support for Southeastern US grasslands conservation, including bringing together philanthropists, government agencies, non-profits, corporate and small-business partners, private landowners and ranchers, historians, educators, and citizen scientists.

Join Gary Spradlin as he walks you through the simple steps to tapping your trees and making your own maple syrup. His process would make a great neighborhood or family project that you can experience starting in February if you wish, or visit Gary at his farm when he starts boiling down the syrup.
