"Center For The Families Of The Fallen"

Dover Air Force Base, Dover Delaware

One cannot drive past the Dover Air Force Base without thinking of the heart breaking ceremony that takes place there almost daily.  For whatever other reason, Dover Air Force Base exists, it is still known to Delawareans and to the country as the place the bodies of those who died fighting in foreign lands are received home.  We in Delaware realize that the "fallen" come to Dover from all fifty states as they make their final trip to their hometown.

In the past year, as the remains of 462 service members along with nearly 2,000 relatives have passed through Dover, the experience on the flight line has become as common as it is excruciating.  Now, to meet the demand and to accommodate what Dover officials expect to be increasing casualties from Afghanistan, the military has embarked on a building surge at this main entry point for the nation's war dead.

In January, Dover opened the “Center for the Families of the Fallen”, a $1.6 million, 6,000 square-foot space of soft lighting and earth-toned furniture where parents, spouses, children, siblings and other relatives assemble before they are taken to the flight line to receive the bodies of their loved ones.

The Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs is planning to design and plant a Memorial Garden, as a project at the Center as there has been no landscaping done.  The Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs consists of 895 members in 28 garden clubs.

Our project is estimated to cost $120.000.00 dollars.  Since the garden will be used year round a large portion of the cost will be in hardscaping.  A wall will be built for privacy along with a water fountain that will be relaxing and emotionally healing.

With the generous donations of two of our Board members, we contracted with a well-known therapeutic Landscape Designer to draw up a set of conceptual plans for this area.  We hope to be able to raise the money needed to proceed with the installation of the garden.  Right now, it is a pretty dismal spot and needs to be enclosed to afford privacy for the families.  This is the area we are now focusing on since it needs immediate attention.

If you or your club is interested in helping with this project you may send donations to:
