Open Gate Garden Club of Paducah
Audubon District
Paducah, KY
Open Gate Garden Club of Paducah, chartered in 1952, meets each second Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., with the exception of June through August.
Our membership is limited to 20 as we usually meet in members’ homes. Our dues are $25 which includes GCKY dues, $1.00 per member for ‘$ for Scholars’, ‘$ for Headquarters’, and Audubon District contribution.
Our major projects include maintaining the Airport Viewing Garden(Barkley Regional Airport), decorating Whitehaven Welcome Center: Christmas and April Quilt Show, and co-sponsoring and entering the McCracken Co. Fair flower show.
Established in 1983, the Club has planted and maintained the Viewing Garden since 1995. It is the only location that friends, family and others may watch planes arrive and depart. In 2015, a certified Monarch Waystation was added which has attracted many monarchs and other butterflies, and entertained viewers and staff as well.
Whitehaven, an 1850 mansion, became an official Kentucky Welcome Center in 1981. Six garden clubs were asked to decorate at Christmas, and we have continued annually to do so. The Music Room tree is adorned with blown-glass ornaments and during the AQS Quilt Show in April, the Club fills the room with fresh flowers.
Since 2000, the Club has co-sponsored the McCracken Co. Flower Show. Members hold various chairs and enter horticulture and design in Floral Hall each last week in June. May and June, members lead workshops on how to enter horticulture and make designs.
To raise money to support our projects, we hold yard or plant sales bi-annually. We have found it a great way to clean out the attic, thin plants and come home with ‘new’ plants and treasures.
Members also are active on the state level. Members are NGC flower show judges, plant society judges and members. Locally, individual members are involved with civic and beautification boards.
Monthly except June, July & August, second Tuesday, 1:00 p.m.
In member homes or other selected places.
